Why we make things and Why it Matters

Why we make things and Why it Matters

You may have noticed that we have been running a series of ‘We Can Learn to…’ workshops this year, this is in response to listening to our customers and those attending events. The purpose of these workshops is to learn new skills from people in our community, have new experiences and meet with others. The workshops are also in response to the times we are living in, times when so much is made for us and mass produced as well as companies encouraging us to spend time on screens. We don’t really need to make anything for ourselves, perhaps a cake or two sometimes!

There is something very different about making an item/piece of art etc ourselves, it brings with it its own story, often utilising materials we have to hand. It gives us something unique we have made and provides a sense of achievement.

Hungry for more? Dive into the pages of 'Why We Make Things and Why It Matters' by Peter Korn. The book is a manifesto for the creative spirit, a compass guiding us through the wilderness of mass production towards the oasis of handmade authenticity. Pick up a copy in the shop for £10.99.

Keep an eye on our events page for more ‘We Can Learn to…’ workshops.

Below are some pics from our first two workshops, ‘We Can Learn to…collage’ and ‘We Can Learn to…weave a basket’.
