Protecting our Environment

We believe in the importance of protecting the natural environment and have worked hard to improve and achieve our green credentials.

Our currents achievements include:

  • solar panels on the roof of our building

  • local waste recycling by SO Recycle, who guarantee that our cardboard and paper get recycled, re-used or turned into new products

  • the use of low environmental impact cleaning products

  • upcycled furniture and materials

  • upcycled IT, often unwanted items donated by our members/customers

  • no plastic cleaning materials

  • refill station, including cleaning and toiletry products

  • cards sold without plastic

  • the sale of local and handmade products, including Made In: Here and Highfield Honey

  • the sale of reusable keep cups

  • our organic & Fairtrade food selection

  • our community green space and composting

  • a number of the team here at OB have chosen not to have cars, reducing their own personal carbon emissions

We are really proud of these achievements, but also aware that there is the need to continually review and improve our efforts towards reducing our carbon emissions and finding new ways to make a difference, no matter how big or small. Our environmental work is a big part of our story and it would be great to hear from you if you have any ideas how we can add to what we are already doing, contact us at info@octoberbooks.org.

The following green events are being held at the shop this month:

We are looking forward to Transition Southampton’s free film and discussion taking place here on Thursday 11th April, 7.30pm - 9pm. For decades carbon emissions have been rising and the impacts of climate change increasing, but what do we really need to do to reach ‘net zero’? What does net zero actually mean? Can we rely on technologies that don’t yet exist at scale? What behaviour changes are needed?

You don’t need to book to come along to their event, but donations appreciated towards the room hire. Take a look at some more details about the evening on their webpage here.

We also have the Climate Emotion Cafe Saturday 13th April at 3.30 to 5.30pm . A welcoming space for people to get together and start an honest conversation about how our converging climate and ecological challenges makes us feel. Facilitators guide the sessions and give you an opportunity to talk and time to process your feelings alongside others who feel the same  ---you are not alone.    More information here
