Writers in Conversation Event with Ruby Cowling

We were delighted to be the host venue of a Writers In Conversation event this month, organised by the Creative Writing Department at the University of Southampton.  Ruby Cowling was invited to talk about her book This Paradise, a collection of short stories that has been viewed as a cult classic.  Ruby read out excerpts from a couple of the short stories. Toby Litt, Head of Creative Writing at the University, asked her questions including her inspiration for writing the book and what authors she had admired.  Questions were then taken from the attendees, most of whom are currently studying creative writing at the University.

This Paradise is a rare and beautiful collection of stories about people fleeing towards places or times or situations they hope might be better – trying to outrun their nature, to deny the undeniable. It feels a particularly apt book for the times we are living in.
