Dr Cheryl Butler is a renowned local historian who specialises in all things Jane Austen. Join us via ZOOM and learn all about this much loved author and her time spent in our city.

Jane Austen & Southampton Spa reflects on Austen’s literary works and themes which may have been influenced by her time in Southampton. It also explores her letters and their references to her friends, relatives and favourite places in the area.

Dr Cheryl Butler is the author of many historical books and papers and a long-term member of the Jane Austen society. She is an experienced public speaker who will be generously sharing her extensive Austen knowledge with us.

Dr Cheryl Butler is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and Honorary Fellow of the University of Winchester and is a member of the editorial board for the Southampton Records Series and the Hampshire Papers. She has published a number of books and papers which have drawn upon the archives from the Southampton Records office and Hampshire Archives including three Southampton Records Series volumes on the Southampton Mayors Book of Fines; the oral history of Itchen Ferry Village We only wore shoes on Sunday; a book on Tudor Southampton: Rioters, Revellers & Reformers; Jane Austen & Southampton Spa and Powder, Prisoners & Paintings – The Story of God’s House Tower.

She is a long term member of the Jane Austen Society and has spoken at the Jane Austen Society of North America annual conference, run study days at Chawton House, spoken on Jane Austen and Southampton at the Jane Austen Museum for the Hampshire Jane Austen Society. She has recently been involved in the restoration of the ‘Southampton Austens’ memorial at Pear Tree Church and the commissioning of a ‘writers seat’ as a practical and visual memorial to Jane Austen and her time in Southampton. 

Winner of the British Association of Local History personal achievement award in 2014 and the City of Southampton award in 2018 for services to heritage.

Her next book is St Mary-Over-The-Water: The story of Pear Tree Church and is due for publication this year!
