In store now! Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy

One of the greatest novels to emerge in the last century, Cormac McCarthy’s revisionist Western is a bleak, blood-soaked masterpiece. Written in an Old Testament prose style that is uniquely McCarthy, he delves into one of the darkest chapters in American history: the genocide of Native Americans.

Following a gang of scalp-hunters commissioned by the governments of the United States and Mexico, Blood Meridian ultimately asks whether or not humanity is worth saving. Based on real events, McCarthy’s primary antagonist, the nightmarish Judge Holden, is one of the greatest characters ever written in fiction: filled with all the fury of Captain Ahab and the omniscience of God, makes this one of the most compelling novels ever written.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy

Paperback £9.99

The wrath of God lies sleeping. It was hid a million years before men were and only men have power to wake it. Hell aint half full.

Set in the anarchic world opened up by America’s westward expansion, Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is an epic and potent account of the barbarous violence that man visits upon man. Through the hostile landscape of the Texas–Mexico border wanders the Kid, a fourteen year-old Tennessean who is quickly swept up in the relentless tide of blood. But the apparent chaos is not without its order: while Americans hunt Indians – collecting scalps as their bloody trophies – they too are stalked as prey.

Since its first publication in 1985, Blood Meridian has been read as both a brilliant subversion of the Western novel and a blazing example of that form. Powerful, mesmerizing and savagely beautiful, it is established as one of the most important works in American fiction of the last century.

We are able to be open 6 days a week again because of your consideration and care whilst in the shop. Though things are opening up, covid cases are still high and a lot of our staff have only received one jab. So we are asking customers to continue to leave that extra space, sanitise their hands and pull on their mask. We really appreciate it.
