Embrace the Pages: A Guide to Reading More and Why Bookshop Adventures Matter

In today's fast-paced world, finding time to read can seem like an elusive luxury. With endless distractions vying for our attention, it's easy to let the joy of reading slip through the cracks. However, diving into a good book as we know offers emotional enrichment, and a gateway to new worlds. So, how can you read more and reignite your passion for books? Let's explore some strategies and discover why shopping at bookshops is an experience like no other.

Cultivate a Reading Habit

Developing a reading habit is essential to enjoying more books. Start by setting aside dedicated time each day for reading, whether it's in the morning with a cup of coffee or before bed to unwind. Even just 15-30 minutes a day can make a significant difference over time. You don’t have to make this a sacred time by any means, I love reading a book on a bus or train even if I only read one chapter before getting distracted again it’s always a joy. There’s no bad place in my opinion to open up a book and start reading.

Set Realistic Goals

Set achievable reading goals to keep yourself motivated. Whether it's a certain number of books per month or exploring different genres, having a target in mind gives you something to work towards. Start with smaller goals and gradually increase them as you build momentum. But don’t be afraid to put a book down and start a new one if it’s not gelling with you, reading is for you and no one else! So don’t hesitate to find a new story to enjoy. it’s not all about finishing ten books a month it’s about enjoying and finding something interesting about each book you decide to read.

Explore Diverse Genres

Don't limit yourself to one genre; branch out and explore different types of literature. Whether you're into mystery, romance, science fiction, or historical fiction, there's a book out there for everyone. Experiment with new authors and styles to keep your reading experience fresh and exciting. You never know what hidden gems you might discover along the way. I was always a big fan of fiction but after a while, I wasn’t sure what I enjoyed reading anymore, so I decided to start reading short essays on various topics and it rekindled my passion for reading! My favourite essay collections (if you wanted to know) are Can’t And Won’t By Lydia Davis and Sleepless by Marie Darrieussecq, even booksellers have reading slumps sometimes! and these refreshing essays were exactly what I needed.

Why Bookshop Adventures Matter

While online shopping offers convenience and accessibility, there's something special about browsing the shelves of a brick-and-mortar bookshop. Here's why shopping at bookshops is an experience like no other:

  • Discover Hidden Treasures: Independent bookshops showcase curated selections and some like us have our staff picks. Browsing the shelves can lead to unexpected discoveries and serendipitous finds.

  • Support Local Businesses: By shopping at independent bookshops, you're supporting local businesses and contributing to the vibrancy of your community.

  • Personalised Recommendations: Booksellers are a valuable resource for personalised recommendations based on your interests and preferences. Our expertise can help you find the perfect book for your next reading adventure!

  • Cultural Hub: Bookshop host author events, book clubs, and literary gatherings that foster a sense of community and engagement. These spaces serve as hubs where ideas are exchanged, and creativity thrives.

Reading more enriches our lives in countless ways, stimulating our minds and nourishing our souls. By cultivating a reading habit, setting realistic goals, and exploring diverse genres, you can unlock the transformative power of books. And remember, the next time you're in need of literary inspiration, venture into a local bookshop (October Books we hope!) and embark on a journey of discovery. Happy reading!
